Friendly Neighbours
William Robb and William Cook were both born in Ireland, and were neighbours in Laigh Row, Port Logan, Kirkmaiden Parish, Wigtownshire.
William Robb was a spirit merchant and a widower in 1851. On census night, in his cottage were he, his married daughter Elizabeth McCullochn and a visitor William Doil from Ireland. This visitor was a linen merchant, a trade more related to the one of William Cook a weaver who lived a few doors away in a small cottage full of his family and two looms.
I always thought that Bill Robb helped out Bill Cook and put up William Doil. The cottages in Laigh Row are very small.
Laigh Row features in a BBC1 series Two Thousand Acres of Sky. It is supposed to be set in Ronandsay in the Hebrides, but we know better! We cheer each time we see the dear old cottages and the harbour. “The Port Logan Inn” also features in some shots of the series.
